Move in at DAS

We moved into the studios yesterday at DAS in Belfast. After spending a week in Belfast we are starting to settle into the feel and culture of this small city.

A productive 2 hour brainstorm session started us out with many exciting routes which would all make exciting projects. We started discussing ideas around complexity, chaos, structure and entropy. We talked about how certain organic and living systems form a complex arrangement by using a large number of very simple functions, an idea of "the greater than the sum of its parts", where many simple actions or instincts create a whole with an apparent higher intelligence or more complex whole purpose than the individuals acting within it.
This conversation took us through the behaviours of large groups of animals where this behaviour is most visible and most aesthetic. With swarms of locusts, schools of fish or clouds of starlings we broke down some of the basic instincts which drive them o move and act the way they do, the locusts for example, driven by a hunger to consume energy which includes their fellow locusts and thus a swarm is created where the behaviour is governed through a mixture of self-chasing cannibalism and the search for crops to quench their hunger and ultimately survive and breed.

The project proposal was to create a new drawing machine and this idea of many small and free-running machines was becoming an obvious route. When this concept is delved into it becomes apparent there are many variables possible and so we broke them down into sections: Movement, power, input, output and drawing and within each section noted possible solutions, some practical and some more ambitious or conceptual but each worth investigating.
